Assisted living is for someone who is largely independent but needs a reliable hand with the everyday things — bathing, dressing, medications, meals, getting to appointments. In Ohio it is a licensed Residential Care Facility, not a medical setting. Staff are caregivers and med aides, not nurses on every shift.

Three things worth knowing first

• Ask which services are included in the base rate versus billed as a separate care level. Base rent is rarely the real number; care levels can add several hundred to well over a thousand dollars a month.
• Ask whether the community holds an Assisted Living Waiver provider agreement and how many current residents use it. Many Cleveland-area communities do not participate at all.
• Ask what happens if your parent's needs exceed the 120-day skilled-nursing cap that applies inside an RCF license, absent a written extension agreement.
